Mental Load Counselling with Kayla Huszar

Even if you slept for 12 hours, it probably wouldn't fix the exhaustion.

Because the mental load isn't physical. It lives in your head - running all the time, invisible to almost everyone, and impossible to put down without everything falling apart.

Yes, benefit coverage eligible, too!

If this sounds like you

You don't just do the dishes. You remember to buy dish soap, notice when the sponge needs replacing, track when the dishwasher filter was last cleaned.

None of that is on any list. It's just in your head. Along with the dentist appointment and where the extra toilet paper is and whether you're almost out of the kids' shampoo and what needs to happen before school on Thursday.

Your partner helps. He does his share. And somehow you're still the one who knows everything - every schedule, every preference, everything that would fall through the cracks if you stopped paying attention for a week.

You've tried explaining it. It doesn't quite land. Not because he doesn't care, but because the mental load is invisible - even to you, until you try to describe it and realize you can't, because it's not a list. It's a constant low-level hum that hasn't gone quiet in years.

That hum is exhausting. And it doesn't go away with a good night's sleep.

Actually rest when you rest.

Through this work, you can:

We might be a fit if this sounds familiar.

Is this right for you?

You're not a control freak. You didn't ask to be the one who holds all of this. It just ended up here - in your head, in your calendar, in the part of your brain that never fully shuts off.

By noon you've already made more decisions than most people make in a day. What everyone is eating. Who needs what and when. What's low in the fridge and what's on the calendar for the rest of the week.

Your partner went back to normal after the kids came. You never did. And the gap between his experience of family life and yours has quietly become a wall.

You don't want to resent him. You love him. But you're the only one who knows when the dishwasher filter was last cleaned, and sometimes - more often lately - that fact alone makes you want to scream.

The emotional weight of being the one who has to manage the delegation in the first place. The exhaustion of explaining what needs doing before anyone will do it. The moment you realize the distribution was always unequal and you're the only one who noticed.

That's what this work addresses. The invisible part - the part that doesn't show up on any chart. And it doesn't require your partner to be in the room.

This work asks something of you.

Some willingness to look honestly at your situation - including the parts that feel like your fault when they aren't. If right now you just need to get through the week, start with the journal and come back.

If you're in active crisis, please reach out to your doctor or a crisis line first.

Meet your therapist

I'm Kayla Huszar.

I'm a registered social worker and mom guilt therapist - featured in Maclean's Magazine (Apple News Best of 2025) and on CBC's The Current. I work specifically on maternal mental health, including the mental load that most people in your life have genuinely never had to think about.

I also know what it's like to be the one who knows where everything is, remembers every appointment, and holds the entire invisible architecture of a household together - while my husband works away on rotation and everyone assumes I have it handled. I do have it handled. That's exactly the problem.

If you're feeling drawn to this work, the next step is a free 20-minute conversation.

The next step

This is not a sales call.

We'll talk about what you're carrying and figure out together whether working with me makes sense - and if so, where to start.

Regardless of whether we work together, you'll leave with a clearer sense of what your next step is. Sometimes that's working with me. Sometimes it's something else. Either way, you'll know more than you do now.

The shift this work creates

From carrying it all in your head - to actually putting some of it down.

Right now The mental hum that never goes quiet. The resentment you can't explain without sounding crazy. The exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. Being the only one who knows everything.

After this work

Naming what you're carrying. The resentment having somewhere to go. Actually resting when you rest. Not being the only one who can see it anymore.

The mental load won't disappear. What changes is that it stops being invisible - to you, and to the people in your life. And once you can see it clearly, you can actually do something about it.
